New York Cardiac Care Unit (NY CCU)

St. Luke's-Roosevelt (SLR) Hospital Center is a full-service CCU that provides tertiary care for the entire tri-state area.  Located in the Morningside campus of Columbia University, on the upper west side of Manhattan, the SLR cardiac care unit receives transfers from hospitals throughout the state for the diagnosis, management and treatment of cardiac disease.   Thus, appropriately termed, "NY Cardiac Care Unit" or "NY CCU".

We pride ourselves in having one of the most efficient and dedicated nursing staff in the country, highly trained for the critical care setting.  Our nurses are the backbone of the CCU and provide the vital bridge between patient care and family.

The Cardiac Care Unit features centralized care, which results in fewer patient transfers between units. Collaboration between attending physicians and the nursing staff is a key goal of this unit, with emphasis on follow-up communication among staff members.

Our specialized staff on the unit also continually enhances their expertise and proficiency in cardiac care through education.

Key Services and Features

When we designed our cardiac intensive care unit, we planned for the latest technology while being mindful of a patient's need to stay in a comfortable environment. The unit is conveniently located close to the cardiac surgery operating room and catheterization suite, ensuring smooth transport to and from procedures.

In addition, our cardiac care unit is fully capable of accomodating many procedures that are conducted at the bedside such as echocardiography, gastrointestinal procedures, hemodialysis and bronchoscopy and other related pulmonary procedures.

About Us

St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center's cardiac care unit (CCU) has 16 private rooms.  Each room is equipped with state-of-the-art heart monitoring, giving our specialized cardiac nurses the ability to monitor each patient from any patient room or our central monitoring station. We also have a large waiting room for families and friends.

Patient Population

Typical patients who stay in the CCU include those who have had the following procedures:

  • Myocardial infarction (heart attack).
  • Unstable angina.
  • Angioplasty.
  • Congestive heart failure.
  • Cardiac arrythmia.
  • Pacemaker/Automated IntraCardiac Defibrillator(AICD) implantation.
  • Cardioversion.
  • Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABG).

The nursing staff receives specialized training in the care of patients with cardiac arrhythmias, chest pain, heart failure and other critical medical conditions.

Plans of care are discussed during patient rounds and reviewed by the interdisciplinary team daily in order to provide the most comprehensive services to patients.

In the event of a heart attack or other cardiac emergency, you can depend on excellent care that starts with our team.  Family members will be kept abreast of patient progress and our staff will take time to talk with them and answer their questions.  If needed, we can specially tailor visiting hours to accommodate their work schedules or other obligations.

We pride ourselves as being one of the strongest cardiac units in the state.  We are conviently located in close proximity to world renouned landmarks such as Times Square, Lincoln Center, Riverside Church, The Church of St. John's the Divine, Columbia University, Central Park, Grant's Tomb and the famed Apollo Theater.
